Janus was uncertain how much more his body could take. He was beginning to feel the effects of fatigue. It was becoming more and more difficult for him to focus, more strenuous to conjure up the power necessary to execute these techniques. Though he had felt somewhat empowered, if not slightly more confident in himself, upon successfully projecting his own Dark Side lightning only moments ago, these feelings were abruptly cut short as Lady Nachta delivered her next set of instructions, finishing them by igniting her light whip and imparting the grim message that should they fail in this task, they could very well meet their end or suffer a severe injury at the very least.
Swallowing uncomfortably, Janus did his best to keep his trepidations in check, burying them deep inside his own mind as he tried to focus his efforts on projecting this defensive bubble of Force energy around himself.
As he concentrated, he felt the air around him begin to grow dense, weighing heavily on him as the air molecules were packed tightly together, giving the sensation of being surrounded by an invisible barrier. It felt slightly more comforting to the Captain's worried mind, but something was undermining his efforts. Something primal in the back of his mind, something that had always been there, just stronger now. Its power had increased in the presence of danger, as it had done when he first met the Emperor face to face.... It was his fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of death.
Try as he might to squelch these emotions, attempting to force them from his thoughts, they persisted, amplified as Lady Nachta drew her whip across the first student in line next to himself. The whip cracked against the invisible shield of energy the student had projected for themselves, but the spectacle did much to bolster Janus' own reservations. His confidence slowly began to wain as the Sith Lord approached him and drew her whip back, snapping it forward towards him with a dexterous flick of her wrist.
Time seemed to flow much slower as Janus watched the approach of the coiled loop of energy, burning brightly the closer it came to him. He could nearly sense the moment of impact as the whip made contact with his own energy field, but the sheer terror of the act caused a temporary shift in the Captain's mental state. As the whip made contact, he flinched beneath the resounding snap of electricity, clenching his eyes shut in the process, and losing his concentration. A mistake that would soon prove exceptionally painful for Janus.
As his concentration broke, the bubble around him dissipated, allowing the whip to penetrate through to him, lashing him across the left eye as the very tip of the weapon burned a path from his eyebrow to his cheek. Recoiling in pain, Janus stumbled backwards, falling to the pavement below as he brought a hand to cover his wounded eye. The pain was unimaginable, like thousands of searing hot needles being forced into his eye socket all at once, blinding him.
His cries of agony echoed through the street, his hand pressed tightly against his face. He could feel the heat radiating out into the surrounding flesh of his eye, seeping outwards like a poison, burning it and disfiguring it, turning it an angry red hue as skin cells, blood vessels, nerve endings and soft tissue reacted to the sudden trauma.
