Hello all,
I've been thinking a lot lately about why we humans want to exist. What makes our minds tick? What keeps our hearts beating? Why do we strive for a better future in the face of total destruction?
or (to put plainly)
Why do we exist?
I have a couple ideas such as: 1) we have ties to family 2) we want to simply live 3) we fear li.....(cough....sorry) Death 4) etc.
but now I ask you guys....what is your reason for existence?
(this is NOT a thread for the seriously depressed or just plain angry.......(^.^)

^ A counter question does not answer the previous question mik. We exist to reproduce because our ancestors reproduced. If you wanna get philosophical, then we want to exist because we want to think we are important, and that we are special.

We exist purely because that is what we are here for. That is what anything is for: to exist. If we don't want to, well, its called suicide. [/sub]

Hehehe, yeah, its my mom .... Anways, my whole reason for living...welll....the before mentioned reason of just wanting to exist. If it wasn't for the whole survival instinct well, then it would be my ties to family and friends but besides that....i just choose to live.
Oh, and i have to agree with Hades on his comment that there is someone controlling the strings but that would be below the dirt that we stand on. The person who gives us freewill is that far far away person. (my belief on who god is appearance wise, well, he could be anything really. from an elephant to a squirrel to that shiny object you find on a beach. It really depends on your personal preference i guess)

I believe the universe's architect to be machine-like in mentality. As opposed to the human mentality Christians attribute to their God. My justification is that a perfect being is perfect, and that means it requires nothing. It perfectly fulfill's it's purpose because it is God. The christian "God" on the otherhand is hardly a god at all, apparently requiring attention, love, and submission to be appeased. Those may be the things a human with lots of power would want, but not a God. God is too perfect to be bothered with such trivial BS.

i can agree with you on the machine theory but you also need to look at its imperfections such as how does this "machine" stay well and maintained in order to work? And also, if there was someone there to take care of the machine (if it needed the help) who might that person or persons be?

I said it has a machine-like mentality. It hasn't got morals or feelings.

I'm afraid I have doubts about some great being pulling the strings out there.
We all exist for the same reason that all the animals and plants do as well; for the continuation of our species. We exist so that another generation may be born through us.
Thats our reason for existing, now what we do with this lifetime is far more important to me. Will we spend our lives lazily and just take whats dealt, or will we be on a quest for power and money? Will you try to do a world of good? Will you be content with what you already have?
Instead of sitting around and pondering why you're here, its much more useful to make use of the time you have, to make something of yourself.
