This is an update on an old race I created, which I believe is most likely outdated. We'll see how it works out. There is probably much I left out.
Name: They refer to themselves as the Utar, and nothing more. However, some may call them the shapeshifters or changelings, similar to the clawdites and others.
Homeworld: In the distant past the Utar lived deep inside the caves of Korriban, which is located, as all know, in the Outer Rim. Anyone with decent travel of the universe must be familiar with Korriban's features. This does not mean the Utar were limited to the planet before their dispersion across the Galaxy; some left to explore the galaxy. How many of those still live is a mystery.
Appearance: As mentioned earlier, this species is comprised of shapeshifters. Each is born into the natural form, with no knowledge of others. To earn a form they must devour the corpse of the form they wish. When this is done they may only change so much, meaning if a Utar wished to look different as a human, they would have to devour another.
The true form of the Utar is truly a mystery that was lost after the main body of their race was exterminated. Perhaps by chance someone will discover it. A difficult task indeed.
Biology: The main ability is their shapeshifting. In more detail, the Utar must devour the entire corpse in order to completely shapeshift; if they only devour an arm, they only have knowledge of the arm's appearance. A skillful user of this ability may be able to use multiple forms in combat. For example, if they were to punch someone they could switch to a rancor's arm. On that note, their shapeshifting abilities are unlimited; they may transform into any living organism. This includes plants, though even the greatest would not suggest it. As they are able to change their bodies quickly at will, the Utar also host supreme regenerative properties; again, a more skilled Utar would be able to take full advantage of this.
A truly fearsome expansion of a Utar's abilities would be if they were to devour another changeling, be it a Utar or any other. Upon devouring a corpse they do not only gain their form, but also their skills. Their talents, their memories. If one devoured one of their own, they would gain all of their forms. If one devoured a clawdite, they could possibly change into any humanoid form they could. At times a Utar would need to accustom themselves to the knowledge of new abilities. Although they have the ability to shapeshift into any humanoid appearance like clawdite, they would have to get used to it. Unfortunately, soon a Utar could be driven mad by an overload of knowledge. A good memory is not always a blessing.
Insanity is definitely a problem. Most often their victims' last memories are filled with pain, fear, agony, misery, and other terrible emotions associated with death. These are often the most absorbed of any of the memories absorbed. When they add up, the hunter's mind may be filled with only raging thoughts. It is if the souls of the fallen haunt them forever. A dark storm of inner rage.
Some may say the people a Utar devours defines who they are. Depends on the Utar. One that developed with one main form, only devouring on occasion, would have a unique personality. One that simply devours could easily be swayed by the personalities of those it devoured. One could become dominant. In some cases several could, being alike a multiple personality disorder.
Utar are born biologically genderless. However, most are born with a mentality for a gender. Some take a liking to being male, some female. The rest simply have no preference. Although they have no real biological genders, they still do have sexual preference. If a Utar attempted to live a normal human life, they would uncontrollably be attracted to either males or females, or possibly both. On the note of living with other races, a Utar can mate with another race. The results can unfortunately be horrifying; the offspring of a Utar must always be born in the Utar's natural form. If a Utar disguised itself as male and mated with a woman, she would give birth to what some would call a beast.
A Utar are technically immortal. As with most species, they require substance to stay alive. To survive they do not need to murder; they just need to eat and drink. They still bleed, despite having amazing regenerative properties.
Cultures: As a nearly extinct species, the Utar are barely even known in the universe. Old Sith records of those who encountered and hunted them could have detailed reports, but finding such records could prove difficult. Regardless, before their extermination on Korriban, they lived in one close-knit village. Culture was tribal-based, each family having ties to others. As a coming of age a Utar would have to kill a create and devour its form. Returning and demonstrating a transformation would symbolize adulthood.
A Utar family could be said to function similarly to a human one. The two parents would have usually already decided on their "genders"; their children would eventually do the same. It was both the "father's" and the "mother's" duty to raise the child and to watch over the household, for "genders" in Utar society were generally equal. This family system was essential to the growth of the next generation. In order to retain sanity intense counseling is needed. Despite being quite brutal, the Utar are not incapable of love. They may even have the biggest hearts.
Leaving this village was not uncommon; to be considered adults Utar did have to leave and kill a creature or person. However, they needed permission from the leader of the village. This leader most often kept advisers, but it was ultimately he who made all the decisions. Leadership in this society was based solely on power, physically, charismatically, etc. As long as one had the support of the people and had the strength to keep it, he stayed in power. Back to the previous topic, a Utar could run away from the village at times. The difficulty of doing so depended on the circumstances. Commonly a runaway would transform into a creature found often in the caves. It all depended on how easily another Utar could sense them through the Force. Their identity could be discovered, or not.
Now with no home village, the Utar are scattered across the universe. Some are ravaging beasts; their havoc would be the only knowledge people have of the race. Most believe they are strange creatures that are mutated. Other survivors have adapted to live with other races. Success is low; there is most often some occurrence that expels them as an outcast.
Force Sensitive: Utar have no talents in the Force. They are simply born with an insignificant amount of midi-chlorians. However by devouring another they absorb theirs, giving a member of this species the possibility of becoming the most powerful in the Force. As a drawback, a Utar may be unused to a great amount; if too much is consumed, they may have to purge their bodies, most likely by regurgitation. Another drawback is the more they devour, the more clouded and mixed they become in terms of the Force; their presence becomes more and more obvious to others. A Jedi could pass by one and simply hear the screams of all its victims. Very suspicious indeed.
